ESOL into Work Participants Gain Valuable Workplace Insights at LUSH Liverpool
A key element of our ESOL into Work programme is providing participants with meaningful employer encounters that help bridge the gap between learning and employment. These visits give individuals the opportunity to explore different workplaces, develop valuable employability skills, and gain confidence in professional settings.
Recently, our ESOL into Work group had the fantastic opportunity to visit LUSH Liverpool, the largest LUSH store in the UK, for a bespoke employer encounter designed to support their employment journey.
The group was warmly welcomed by Dan, Community Outreach Coordinator, who provided an insightful tour of the store. Participants explored the spa facilities, workshop areas and the store's unique party zone, where they were invited to take part in a question-and-answer session.
The visit sparked plenty of curiosity, with participants asking thoughtful questions about available roles, career pathways, what Dan enjoys most about his position, and how LUSH products are made. Dan also explained the recruitment process for seasonal opportunities, helping participants gain a better understanding of how to apply for jobs and what employers look for in candidates.
The employer encounter then moved on to a practical interview and customer service activity. Participants were split into groups and challenged to take on the roles of customer and LUSH team member. Those acting as staff members were tasked with identifying the customer's needs and recommending suitable products based on a given scenario.
Dan encouraged participants to use open-ended questions, active listening and effective communication skills, all of which are essential in customer-facing roles. Within minutes, the group was fully immersed in the activity, demonstrating confidence, enthusiasm and excellent teamwork. One participant even successfully upsold a product, showcasing natural sales and customer service skills.
It was wonderful to see how engaged and confident everyone was throughout the exercise. For many participants, speaking English in professional situations can feel daunting, but they approached the activity with enthusiasm and showed no signs of nervousness.
Creativity, Teamwork and Confidence
Following feedback and discussion from the customer service activity, it was time for a hands-on experience that brought out the group's creative side.
Participants learned how LUSH bath bombs are made before creating their very own. The activity was filled with laughter, encouragement and collaboration, with participants supporting one another throughout the process. It was another excellent example of the confidence and friendships that continue to develop within the group.
Experiences such as these are invaluable, as they allow participants to practise communication skills, work as part of a team, and experience a workplace environment in a supportive and engaging way.
A Memorable Day
At the end of the visit, participants were able to take their handmade bath bombs home and were also treated to a LUSH goodie bag.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dan and the entire team at LUSH Liverpool for their warm welcome, generosity and commitment to supporting our participants. The visit was not only fun and interactive but also provided valuable insight into the world of work, helping participants take another positive step towards employment.
Everyone left feeling inspired, motivated and more confident about their future career opportunities.
