Yaghoub’s Story: Building Confidence, Finding Support and Taking the Next Step

Sometimes things take time.

When Yaghoub first came into the Hub, he was looking for help to find work. He was quiet at first and worried about getting his English wrong, but he kept showing up. Step by step, he began to build trust with the team.

A CV was put together, job applications were made, and eventually Yaghoub secured part-time work as a kitchen porter at a local supported residence for older people.

It was a proud moment. Yaghoub was pleased to be working, and hoped his hours might grow over time.

Coming Back When He Needed Support

When his hours did not increase, Yaghoub continued to pop into the Hub.

In October 2025, he came in again, this time with a different worry. He had received an eviction notice and was unsure where else to go for support. Because he already knew the team, his instinct was to come back to the Hub and ask for help.

That trust mattered.

The team sat down with Yaghoub and went through the notice with him. With his permission, they contacted his landlord, but did not receive a response. From there, they helped Yaghoub get in touch with the right housing support through Liverpool City Council.

To make sure Yaghoub felt comfortable and fully understood what was being discussed, an Arabic interpreter was requested for the call. This helped ease his nerves and made sure nothing was missed.

Yaghoub was assigned a housing officer and given a follow-up appointment. He was also told his Property Pool Plus band would move from C to B.

Making Sure Yaghoub Had the Right Advice

The JobsPlus team helped Yaghoub understand his options, but they were clear about one important thing: when expert advice was needed, he deserved expert advice.

Yaghoub was signposted to free housing and legal support, and the team continued to check in with him through regular one-to-one conversations.

The homelessness team later found that the eviction notice was unlawful. This meant that, until Yaghoub received the correct court papers, he still had a roof over his head.

That clarity made a real difference.

When Yaghoub was later told his rent would almost double, the team once again helped him connect with legal support and made sure the homelessness team were updated.

Looking at Work in a New Way

Alongside the housing support, conversations continued about work and the future.

During one job search conversation in the Hub, the team talked with Yaghoub about roles that could offer more security, more hours, or possibly accommodation. One idea was security work, something Yaghoub was interested in exploring.

Together, they contacted Bright Training Agency and found a government-funded security training course in Liverpool city centre. The team went through the course requirements with Yaghoub, including the checks he would need, and he was happy to sign up.

Because the course involved three weeks of full-time training and regular travel into the city centre, JobsPlus offered to support his travel costs.

Yaghoub is a proud man and does not like taking help from anyone. When support is offered, he often smiles and shakes his head.

But the team reminded him that this is what JobsPlus is for. The “Plus” is about that extra support, the practical help that makes taking the next step possible.

Growing in Confidence

Yaghoub has always had strong skills. He studied English at university for three years after coming to the UK, and he can read and write beautifully.

At first, he often came into the Hub with written notes or letters. Speaking felt harder, and he worried about making mistakes.

Over time, with gentle encouragement, Yaghoub began to practise his spoken English more in the Hub. In one of his notes, he asked if people could speak slowly and clearly with him. Of course, the answer was yes.

That small request showed real confidence. Yaghoub knew what helped him, and he was able to ask for it.

Now, when Yaghoub arrives at the Hub, he greets the team at the door with a smile, a hello and eye contact - Which is a big change.

Feeling Part of the Hub

Yaghoub has also started attending more group sessions at the Hub, including a recent wellbeing event with Lee, which he really enjoyed.

The team also introduced him to one of the local Community Male Champions who speaks Arabic and Scouse. The two got on well, giving Yaghoub another friendly connection in the community.

These moments matter. They are not just about appointments, forms or job searches. They are about belonging, confidence and feeling able to take part.

What Has Changed for Yaghoub

Yaghoub now has stronger support around housing, work and wellbeing.

He has kept working, explored new training, taken steps towards security work, and continued to build his confidence speaking English. He has also shown real resilience during a stressful housing situation, asking for help when he needed it and staying engaged throughout.

The biggest change is in how he carries himself.

Yaghoub is more confident. He is more connected. He is more willing to speak, ask questions and take the next step.

And sometimes, that is where transformation begins.

Looking Ahead

Yaghoub’s next step is to complete his security training and keep exploring work that gives him more stability.

The team will continue to support him with travel costs, job search, housing signposting and confidence-building along the way.

Yaghoub has already shown that he is willing to keep going, even when things feel uncertain.

One step at a time, he is building something stronger for himself.
