Carol’s Story: Finding Connection, Confidence and a Reason to Step Back Out

Sometimes change can start with a conversation on the doorstep.

For Carol, it began during a JobsPlus neighbourhood outreach visit, when one of the team spotted her trying to move a large round table out of her home. A quick offer of help turned into a chat about what was happening locally, what JobsPlus could offer, and what Carol might want to be part of.

Carol was not looking for work at that point. What she was looking for was something just as important: connection, routine, and a safe place to take a breath.

A Small Moment That Opened the Door

Carol is warm, open and full of character. She loves charity shops, has a cat at home, and was interested in activities that felt friendly, practical and welcoming.

When she first spoke to JobsPlus, she had a lot going on. She was navigating recovery, changes in her family life, the loss of her much-loved dog, and worries about her housing after receiving a letter about a significant rent increase.

Living alone meant some days felt especially hard. What mattered in that first conversation was that Carol felt listened to, not judged or rushed.

The team told her about upcoming activities, including walks in Princes Park, healthy cooking sessions, wellbeing support, and community events at Kelvin Grove. Carol liked the sound of having somewhere to go and people to connect with.

That first chat became the first step.

Taking Things One Step at a Time

Carol chose to come into JobsPlus and sign up. That was a big step.

When she arrived, she was welcomed with a coffee and a biscuit, then shown the Comfort Zone, a quiet and cosy space where people can sit, pause and feel safe. Carol sat down, held one of the cushions and blankets, and allowed herself to be honest about how much she had been carrying.

From there, Carol kept taking practical steps.

She bought a new phone after being without internet access at home. With support to add credit and get set up, she began using it to stay in touch with JobsPlus and her support worker.

She also agreed to apply for a new birth certificate, with the document being sent to JobsPlus at her request so she could complete her sign-up in a way that felt manageable for her.

What stands out most is Carol’s willingness to try. Even when something felt frightening or unfamiliar, she stayed open to the next small step.

Support That Walked Alongside Her

JobsPlus supported Carol in a way that worked for her.

The team helped her feel welcome, gave her a safe space to return to, supported her with phone credit, and helped with the practical steps needed to complete her sign-up.

Carol also connected with Matt from the Wellbeing Enterprise team around housing and money worries. At a time when it made a real difference, she received food shopping vouchers and was supported to think through some of the challenges she was facing.

She has also been encouraged to take part in local wellbeing activities, including healthy cooking and hand massage sessions led by another participant who has started her own aromatherapy and massage business.

This was not about rushing Carol towards an outcome. It was about helping her feel seen, supported and able to move at her own pace.

What Has Changed for Carol

Carol now has stronger links with people who can support her, and she has started to build more structure into her week.

She is using her phone to stay connected. She has taken practical steps around her identity documents. She is engaging with wellbeing support around housing, money and day-to-day confidence.

The team have seen more smiles, more conversation and more hope.

Carol’s recovery group even made a bag with words of love on it and a thank-you pad, recognising the difference this connection has made.

Her life feels fuller than it did when she first met JobsPlus. She has somewhere safe to go, people she can call, and activities to look forward to.

The change is not just about one appointment or one form being completed. It is about Carol feeling able to start imagining what could come next.

Looking Ahead

Carol is interested in trying a computer course, even though she has said it feels scary. Learning more digital skills could help her manage bills and household tasks online, making day-to-day life easier and giving her more independence.

She also loves charity shops, so the team have gently explored the idea of volunteering in one in the future. It could be a lovely way for Carol to build confidence, meet new people and spend time in a place that already feels like her.

Carol is still on her journey, but she is taking steps that matter.

And sometimes, that is where the magic is.
